In December, RTR honors the life and work of beloved Western Oregon University theatre professor Robert Leland Page, affectionately known as Bob, with its production themed Of Ghosts & Goodwill, featuring A Christmas Carol. The show is adapted by Bob Page’s son Patrick, and former student Jason England directs.
England’s desire is to memorialize the work of his mentor and professor, while returning A Christmas Carol to its original sense and sensibility.
“It is because of Bob Page I’m in theatre, and my first theatrical experience was with his Christmas Carol,” says England. “This is my way of saying ‘thanks’ to the teacher who gave so much to so many.” During Page’s 28 years at Western Oregon University, he directed more than 75 shows; 14 were Broadway musicals. Page performed as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol for many years; was honored time and again for his teaching; and though he adored life, his dearest love was always theatre. “For those lucky enough to know Bob, we can truly say God blessed us, everyone,” says England. “Our Christmas Carol is a gift I couldn’t give without him.”
The adaptation is faithful to the story’s literary roots, with characters narrating Dicken’s tale within the story they are telling.
Cast includes Curtis Hanson, David Loftus, Kevin Newland Scott, Marvin Gray, Danyelle Tinker, Deb Kropf, Kristah Rodriguez, Paulo Rodriguez, Alan Hakim, Rosalind Fell, Wynee Hu, Ellis Zehnder, and Jason England
