RTR in April: The Worst of Times and the Worser of Times

WHEN: Friday & Saturday, April 10-11, 2015

THE BEST WAY TO GET READY FOR THE WORST

April 10th and 11th Readers Theatre Rep saves its audience from disasters of all kinds
with a survival seminar disguised as a very, very funny play: Jane Anderson’s Tough
Choices for a New Century, directed by Bob Martin. The month’s production is themed
THE WORST OF TIMES AND THE WORSER OF TIMES. “This play is as dark as it is funny,”
says Martin. “You’re laughing while you’re recognizing the crazy world we live in.”
An entry in the Annual Humana Festival of New American Plays, Tough Choices is
fashioned as a seminar with a lecturer offering preparedness advice, while his
wife/assistant seems to be in the midst of her own personal catastrophe. A much more
charismatic lecturer makes an argument for drastic measures in these drastic times:
an eerie presentiment of our post-911 life (the play was written in 1997).
“Jane Anderson predicted the future with this play,” Martin says. “And like any good
comedy writer, she wants us to wake up – but still have hope. There’s a lot of truth
underlying these laughs.”
Jane Anderson is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright, earning Emmy Awards
for her writing and directing, Emmy, Golden Globe and Penn nominations, and Directors
Guild Awards and Writers Guild of America Awards for her work on Mad Men and Olive
Kitteridge.
