RTR DROPS THE SCRIPTS AND DELIVERS THE ART
Readers Theatre Repertory keeps the hits coming with this special October offering: a fully staged production of Yasmina Reza’s smash-hit Art, directed by Tobias Andersen. “One of the most craftily titled plays in contemporary theater,” “a marriage of Moliere and Woody Allen,” and “fiendishly clever,” Art provocatively pushes the bounds of creativity, friendship, and the nature of art itself.
In a chic apartment, Marc and Yvan discover that their friend Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, has bought a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc is horrified, and a heated (and funny) debate follows. Yvan is desperate to keep the peace, but he’s fighting a losing battle. A fascinating clash of personal taste, art philosophies, love lives and a dish of olives, Art is a journey emblematic of all creative hearts and minds.
“We are so fortunate to be staging this play,” says co-artistic director Mary McDonald-Lewis. “Tobias Andersen brought us this production and cast, and we couldn’t say no. This is a unique opportunity for our audiences to see a fully staged version of Art in Portland’s longest-lived artist collective, Blackfish Gallery.”
