Santa’s a pervert, and then there are the deer: Vixen the vamp; Cupid, all gay camp; Dancer, the Jewish deer; Donner, Rudolph’s guilt-ridden father… and the rest. They all have their say in The Reindeer Monologues, Readers Theatre Repertory’s December 11-12 gift to Portland. The production was themed “A Dirty Little Secret Santa.”
Guest director Jason England said there’s enough holiday merriment onstage elsewhere. “This is the opposite of making yuletide bright,” he said. “The reindeer accuse of being a ‘grotesque libidinous troll of a man,’ and this is their dark tell-all.”
England hoped folks will send the kids to A Christmas Story, then treat themselves to “A Dirty Little Secret Santa.” Careful, though: as one reviewer put it, “…you’ll never again be so complacent about leaving the chimney unguarded at Christmas.”
The cast included Marvin Gray, Sarah Logan, Heather Peterson and Chris Porter, among others.
