On February 10th and 11th, Readers Theatre Repertory has a Valentine for its audiences: an evening themed “Love’s Funny That Way” topped off with chocolate truffles from Via Delizia.
Director David Berkson, making his debut as RTR’s newest company member, has chosen Sure Thing, by David Ives, and Terminating, by Tony Kushner, as the perfect “date night” outing. In one short hour, two of the funniest playwrights in America will take the audience through first dates, second chances, fertility clinics and Oedipal conflicts. Shakespeare’s Sonnets # 138 and 75 will round out the evening.
“Let’s face it,” says Berkson, “love is funny. It’s sort of a jumble of slapstick and tragicomedy and farce and a kind of hilarious goofy earnestness, all rolled up in one.”
In honor of the month, Via Delizia, a Pearl District dessert destination, treated the audience to sweets for sweethearts – and others! — enjoying an evening of love’s foibles at RTR.
The cast included Shannon Day, Andy Lindberg, Garland Lyons and Ina Strauss.
