Irish Month at Readers Theatre Rep

Big Tuesday

by Thomas McLaughlin
Directed by Mary McDonald-Lewis

This year, join us for Big Tuesday by Thomas McLaughlin. A seemingly ordinary day in the lives of two Belfast housecleaners becomes a sorrowful, hopeful, and deceptively simple tale  of remembrance and regret. Mary McDonald-Lewis directs, with Suzanne Owens-Duvall and Kathleen Worley playing Olive and Claudette in this poignant play.

“The Troubles defined Northern Ireland from the 1920s to the 1990s, and reached as far back as the Seventeenth Century,” McDonald-Lewis says. “That means violence and loss, rage and grief are DNA-deep in that land.” The director says she was captivated by the mundane conversation between two women, and yet, how centuries-old their reality was. “We find them after the Peace Process. But their world is forever scarred with horror. How do they survive it all? How does anyone?”

Big Tuesday runs Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16 at Blackfish Gallery, 420 NW 9th Ave in Portland. The show starts at 8PM and run about an hour. Admission is $10.00, cash or check only. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and walk-ins should arrive by 7:30P. All reserved seats will be released to walk-ins at 7:55P sharp. For information and ticket reservations: 971-266-3787, or readerstheatrerep@gmail.com.

Readers Theatre Repertory (RTR) was founded in 2001 to tell “small stories with big ideas at their heart”, tales that alternately amuse, confront, assuage and inspire.  Using one-act plays as the text, the company focuses on intimate human relationships to explore universal themes.  Through these stories and through educational outreach and affordable ticket prices, RTR is committed to developing, expanding and diversifying Portland’s theatrical audiences.  The company’s mainstage season performs at Blackfish Gallery in Portland’s Pearl District.  For more information about RTR, visit https://readerstheatrerep.com/  or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Readers-Theare-Repertory/124232100940070

A NOTE ABOUT TICKET PRICES

At RTR we’re committed to producing theatre that’s both excellent and affordable. Since our inception, we had not raised our ticket prices for 16 years. Two years ago we  raised the price to $10 per ticket. While we regret any inconvenience this may cause our patrons, we’re confident that they will understand that such a step is necessary to keep up with the rising costs of production.

I was introduced to both Brendan Behan and Reader’s Theatre last night, and will be a regular for now on. It was enchanting — like sitting around a living room with family and friends, listening to the local wit on the radio. The only thing missing was the Guinness! Eiran go bragh, Reader’s Repertory! Thank you!
