A MAGICAL NIGHT IN WALES WITH UNDER MILKWOOD

On January 12-13, Readers Theatre Repertory presents the great prose-poem-play, by Dylan Thomas, directed by Mary McDonald-Lewis

Set in the small Welsh fishing village of Llareggub (“bugger all” spelled backwards, a Thomas joke), the play follows the comings and goings of the inhabitants over 24 hours and by giving us a glimpse into their lives – both peculiar and somehow peculiarly ordinary – it manages to say something universal about the human conditions. It is also wondrously, uniquely Welsh.

“I’m of Welsh descent, and have a deep love of both Tomas and the land,” says McDonald-Lewis, who also performs in the show. “Thomas began this story at 17, in 1931. In ’33 and again in ’44 it emerges in his work, until finally he completes it for production on the BBC in September ’53. He planned revisions, but died in New York city while on tour that November.”

The language of Under Milkwood has long been lauded as some of the finest in the theatre corpus. Critic Kenneth Tynan wrote: “He conscripts metaphors, rapes the dictionary and builds a verbal bawdy-house where words mate and couple on the wing, like swifts. Nouns dress up, quite unselfconsciously, as verbs, sometimes balancing three-tiered epithets on their heads and often alliterating to boot.”

The cast includes Brian Harcourt, Tim Jaeger, Mary McDonald Lewis, Kevin Murphy, and Gary Powell, among others.

The show starts at 8PM and run about an hour. Admission is $10.00, cash or check only.

Reservations are strongly encouraged, and walk-ins should arrive by 7:30P. All reserved seats will be released to walk-ins at 7:55P sharp. For information and ticket reservations: 971.266.3787, or readerstheatrerep@gmail.com.

I was introduced to both Brendan Behan and Reader’s Theatre last night, and will be a regular for now on. It was enchanting — like sitting around a living room with family and friends, listening to the local wit on the radio. The only thing missing was the Guinness! Eiran go bragh, Reader’s Repertory! Thank you!
