The Turn of the Screw

“shattering……a bracing account of rampant terrorthe darkest, richest ghost story…”  Brad Leithouser, The New Yorker

A young governess is hired to care for two orphaned children on a large estate in the English countryside. But she soon finds herself in the grips of the house’s terrible secrets and horrifying past. This October, Readers Theatre Repertory invites you to celebrate Halloween and Friday the 13th with The Turn of the Screw, a new adaptation of Henry James’s classic tale of terror, suspense, obsession, and madness.

“This is the scariest ghost story I’ve ever read,” says adapter and director David Berkson, “and the most terrifying use of an unreliable narrator.” RTR’s new staging is a word-for-word adaptation of James’s original. The cast includes Caitlin Lushington and Sam A. Mowry. “We’re so fortunate to have this rich material performed by such an outstanding and accomplished pair of actors,” says Berkson. “and this story needs great actors to match its psychological complexity. Ghosts are spooky, but sometimes people are more terrifying.”

The Turn of the Screw runs Friday and Saturday night, October 13 and 14, at Blackfish Gallery, 420 NW 9th Ave in Portland. Shows start at 8PM and run about an hour to an hour and a half. Admission is $10.00. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and walk-ins should arrive by 7:30P. All reserved seats will be released to walk-ins at 7:55P sharp. I was introduced to both Brendan Behan and Reader’s Theatre last night, and will be a regular for now on. It was enchanting — like sitting around a living room with family and friends, listening to the local wit on the radio. The only thing missing was the Guinness! Eiran go bragh, Reader’s Repertory! Thank you!
